Ebike Safety Tips for National Bicycle Safety Month

news

As National Bicycle Safety Month kicks off this May, cyclists and motorists alike are reminded of the importance of sharing the road responsibly. With the growing popularity of electric bikes (e-bikes), it’s crucial for riders to prioritize safety and be aware of the unique considerations that come with these powerful machines.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) supports this annual initiative, urging everyone to obey traffic laws and respect each other’s rights on the road. E-bike riders, in particular, should take extra precautions to ensure their safety and the safety of those around them.

“As cyclists ourselves, we understand the vulnerability that comes with two wheels,” says Josh Jones, CEO and Founder of Murf Electric Bikes, a leading e-bike manufacturer. “It’s essential for e-bike riders to prioritize responsible and safe riding, not just during National Bicycle Safety Month, but year-round.”

To help promote e-bike safety, experts recommend the following tips:

  1. Always wear a properly fitted helmet: Choose a helmet that meets safety standards and ensure it fits snugly and securely on your head.
  2. Wear closed-toed shoes: Protect your feet and maintain better control of your e-bike by wearing sturdy, closed-toed shoes.
  3. Increase visibility with bright clothing: Wear high-visibility clothing, especially during low-light conditions, to make yourself more noticeable to motorists.
  4. Maintain your tires: Check your tire pressure regularly and ensure they are inflated to the recommended PSI to prevent flats and improve handling.
  5. Perform a pre-ride checklist: Before each ride, check your brakes, lights, and battery level to ensure your e-bike is in proper working order.

In addition to these tips, e-bike riders should familiarize themselves with local laws and regulations regarding e-bike use. Some cities and states have specific rules about where e-bikes can be ridden and how fast they can travel.

Jones adds, “As the weather warms up and more people are out riding, we hope both kids and adults use these tips to stay safe, so everyone can have an enjoyable experience.”

National Bicycle Safety Month serves as a timely reminder for all road users to prioritize safety and share the road responsibly. By following these e-bike safety tips and staying alert, riders can enjoy the many benefits of electric biking while minimizing the risk of accidents and injuries.
