How to Ride Safely in the Summer Heat

By Coach John Hughes

I raced the Furnace Creek 508 through the Mojave Desert and Death Valley twice. I set a course record and won both times. I raced for over 30 continuous hours in each of those two races. I wasn’t the fastest rider—many would have beaten me in a 40-km time trial. I wasn’t the lightest rider, nor was I the best climber. Read more.

A Classic Finishing Touch

by Jim Langley

Every spring it’s one of the most-read cycling magazines, so you may already have seen Bicycling magazine’s 2019 Buyer’s Guide issue (all-white cover, which reminded me of the Beatles). It hit the newsstand back in March and arrived in the mail even before. If you read closely, you might also have seen a couple of small pieces by me on pages 8 and 46. Read more.

by Lars Hundley

Every now and then you run into a product that you never knew existed and wonder why you’d never heard of it before. I’ve been using the Hammerhead Karoo over the eight weeks or so, and I’d say that it’s the best GPS bike computer I’ve used yet. I’ve used several different Garmin models over the years, and was most recently riding with the Wahoo ELEMNT, which I was very happy with, when I started testing the Karoo. Read more.

Fitness for Cancer Patients and Survivors

by Gabe Mirkin, M.D.

In October 2018 I reported on a huge study from the Cleveland Clinic that showed exercise reduced death rates from all causes during the 21-year study period and that those with the highest levels of fitness had the lowest death rates. Most dramatically, the study showed that a high level of fitness was more beneficial than not smoking. Read more.
