Dry Your Ride: Keep Corrosion and Rust at Bay

Every time I go to my LBS, I’m jealous of their bike-washing station and wish I had one at home, especially during the winter months. One tool they use at the wash station is a commercial air compressor. The compressor is great for mounting and inflating tires, but it is also the perfect tool for blowing water out of all the nooks and crannies on a bike to prevent corrosion or rust.

While the average person neither owns nor has the space for a commercial air compressor, Muc-Off’s new It Blows! Precision Air Blaster is the next best thing. It’s powerful, relatively lightweight, and durable.

Power in Your Hands

The 80W motor delivers four fan speeds—Turbo, High, Medium, and Low. It runs at 100,000 RPM in Turbo mode, 80,000 at High, 60,000 at Medium, and 40,000 RPM at Low. Turbo mode drains the battery quickly, lasting only about 10 minutes. However, the battery lasts up to 90 minutes on Low. I used It Blows! mainly on the Medium setting. The unit uses a USB-C port and fully charges in 3 hours. A battery indicator light on the bottom of the unit shows how much power remains.

During extended use, the unit can become warm, and the company recommends using it only in temperatures between 32 and 104 degrees F (0 and 40 degrees C).

Muc-Off states that It Blows! has a noise level between 56 and 81 dB. So I Googled what those levels compare to. Here’s the breakdown:

  • ~50-60 dB (Moderate): Like moderate rainfall, a quiet office, or normal conversation
  • ~60-70 dB (Loud): Normal conversation, dishwashers, TV audio; can become annoying with extended exposure.
  • ~70-80 dB (Very Loud/Irritating): Vacuum cleaners, busy city traffic, food blenders; prolonged exposure can be damaging.
  • 80 dB & Above (Potentially Dangerous): A noisy restaurant, motorcycles, sirens; extended or repeated exposure to 85 dB or above can cause permanent hearing loss.

Lightweight and Portable

It Blows! weighs 295 grams and fits comfortably in your hand. Measuring 68 x 36 x 124 mm, the unit is easily portable, and you can toss it in your car or travel bag to dry multiple bikes after a wet ride/race.

Weighing 295 grams, it fits comfortably in your hand.

The unit comes with a silicone nozzle to channel air, blowing water out of hard-to-reach places.

Durable for Years of Use

Made from CNC-machined aluminum with an anodized finish, It Blows! is highly durable, and Muc-Off provides a 12-month warranty effective from the date of purchase.

Bottom Line

While Muc-Off’s It Blows! Precision Air Blaster is on the expensive side — $150 — it offsets the cost of replacing corroded bike parts. Its compact design makes it more desirable than a large industrial compressor and more portable. Dry your ride easily after every wash or wet ride, keeping it rust- and corrosion-free.

I’ve used the WOLFBOX MF50 readily available on amazon for $40 for lots of things, initially not bike-related at all. It was recommended by a tech columnist in the San Jose Mercury newspaper.
Recently I washed mud off the bottom of my gravel bike shoes and used the WOLFBOX to quicky dry them.
