GU’s Newest Flavor: Tropical Fruit Vibes
Recently, GU introduced a new flavor to its Liquid Energy line – Passion Fruit Orange Guava, or POG for short. The tropical blend combines passion fruit, orange, and guava for refreshing, not-overly-sweet on-the-go nutrition.
What’s the difference between GU Liquid Energy and Gel packs? Well, the Liquid Energy is a thinner, more liquid format, ideal for people who don’t like consuming a thicker gel or chews during rides. There are pros and cons to the liquid consistency. Pros include that it’s easy to ingest for a quick carb boost (24 grams per packet), and the packets can even be frozen to form a tasty slushy. Cons are that the liquid consistency makes it easier to spill and messier, and the packets are slightly larger than GU’s gel.

GU’s recent release of POG is on the heels of its launch of sour peach Energy Gel at Sea Otter Classic. The new flavors are trending away from overly sweet. As an endurance rider, I appreciate this trend because after a long day in the saddle, I don’t want to consume only sweet nutrition.
Note that POG flavor is caffeine-free, which was perfect for me since I need to avoid caffeine. The 1.7-ounce Liquid Energy packet provides 100 calories, 7 grams of sugar, 75 mg of sodium, and 450 mg of amino acids. POG is also gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan.
The company suggests the best way to consume POG depends on the number of hours you’re exercising:
1 hours: Five minutes before starting a ride, consume one packet
1-2 hours: Target consuming one packet every 20-30 minutes
2-3 hours: Supplement the Liquid Energy Gel with Energy Chews, Hydration Tabs for electrolyte replacement, or Roctane Energy Drink (energy + hydration)
Bottom Line
GU’s POG flavor is a winner. It’s light, refreshing, and not overly sweet. If you’re looking for a caffeine-free option, this new flavor is worth dropping into your jersey pocket for your next ride.
