Safety First
When it comes to selecting a helmet the first priority should be safety and the Rudy Project Rebel Helmet excels in this area by passing Rudy Project’s own internal Rotational Impact Test and also received a 5-star Virginia Tech Helmet rating. Interestingly, the Rebel gets a top rating even without the addition of a specific rotational impact safety system like MIPS. The Rebel uses a dual density design that strategically locates low and high-density EPS foam throughout the helmet to maximize safety while also keeping helmet weight down. There are also carbon fiber panels used to provide strong and light structural reinforcement that allow for bigger vents.

A unique safety feature of the Rebel is their Bugstop padding. The helmet comes with a standard pad set and the Bugstop set. As the name implies, the Bugstop uses a mesh between the pads and over the vent openings to stop bugs from entering the helmet without impacting ventilation. As someone who has to make several emergency stops every year for a bee in my helmet, I really appreciate this feature. And the rear of the helmet has reflective stickers for added visibility at night.
Secure Fit
A well-fitting helmet is essential for both safety and comfort, and the Rebel does well in this regard. The RSRMICRO11 retention dial located at the rear of the helmet is quick and easy to use, achieving a very snug fit with a light turn of the dial. The rear cage is also vertically adjustable to ensure the cage nicely cradles different head shapes. Speaking of shape, helmets tend to fall into one of two head shape categories: Round or Oval. The Rebel seems to lean more towards Round, but still fit well on my more Oval head, though perhaps sitting a little high as the padding inside the helmet did not touch the top of my head.

The Rebel’s retention straps are another key component of its fit system. The Divider Pro is used to keep the straps properly astride of the ears. This plastic divider physically positions the straps to clear the ears and does an excellent job of keeping the straps flat against the head and out of the wind. Connecting both sides of the straps is a unique FidLock buckle that uses magnets to allow easy one-handed operation. Simply bring one end close to the other and the magnets snap the buckle into place. Unbuckling with one hand is a simple as pulling down the lever tab to separate the two parts.

Strap length/tightness is easy to adjust at the buckle and excess strap length is held securely by a rubber grommet. My only minor complaint with the Rebel is the straps seem to be a little slippery through the buckle and every few rides I need to snug the straps again as they have slowly loosened.
Comfortable Ride
Out on the bike the Rebel just disappears on my head. Though not super-helmet light, the listed weight of 298 grams for the size S/M is respectable and not noticeably heavy on the head. The 22 vents and relatively thick upper structure make for great airflow through the Rebel that helped keep me cool on many hot summer rides. As described previously, the Divider Pro and FidLock buckle keep the straps in place without any annoying flapping or contact with the ears.

The Rebel is not an aero helmet so the looks fall into the ‘classic helmet’ category. The overall shape and size of the Rebel is a little less svelte than some helmets so it can look a little wide if you have a more oval head shape.
Bottom Line
The Rudy Project Rebel Helmet is a premium option for cyclists seeking a blend of advanced safety features, high-quality construction, and excellent fit/comfort. A good option for round heads and those who prefer a classic looking helmet with great venting.

Again, I see nothing to support any need for reduced rotational impact being provided by a helmet. What is the science? Tell me about the testing. My helmets have kept me alive a couple of times, but they reduced the impact of my brain against the inside of my skull. I challenge Rod bike Rider to convince me that I should wear a helmet that reduces rotational impacts.
