Anti-Aging: Back on Top – Shut Up Legs

By Coach John Hughes

For several years John Elmblad and I drove around Colorado following the US Pro Cycling Challenge. As I remember one year Jens Voigt launched a solo attack on the stage over Independence Pass (12,095 ft.). “Shut Up Legs!” Voigt probably was telling himself. “Shut up legs!” was his catch phrase, useful in all kinds of situations. Jim’s Tech Talk

By Jim Langley

I’ve been a member of our local bike club, the Santa Cruz County Cycling Club since I moved here in 1982. Good members make a good club, so when I’m asked to contribute something I try to help. And this time, I think what I was asked to provide will interest you, too. Read more.

Titanium (Quick-Release) Skewers – How Safe Are They, Are They Worth It?

By Rick Schultz

Over a decade ago, bicycle component manufacturers started moving from steel to titanium. At the time, they didn’t understand that titanium is a notch sensitive metal. The first pedals to use titanium for the spindles (axles) snapped and several cyclists got seriously injured. Several years ago, a friend, who was a bike shop owner, got a pair of titanium skewers to test. During a 40mph descent on a group ride, he hit a small rock in the road and the front skewer snapped, he crashed and again, he got seriously injured. So what do these 2 incidents have in common? 100% Speedcraft XS Sunglasses – Quick Review

By Sheri Rosenbaum

I have a smaller, narrower face, and some oversized shield-style sunglasses overwhelm my face. Then 100% launched the 2022 Tokyo Night collection inspired by the city’s neon lights. The frames have been around for two years, but 100% added their purple multilayer mirror lens to the collection. The lens provides color and contrast enhancement which I found valuable when riding on overcast or sunny days. Read more.

Does Food Order Matter?

By Kevin Kolodziejski

Besides having your ride go right, what gives you delight?

Puts a hop in your step. Allows you to brush off the bad stuff. Gets you up ahead of the alarm clock. As you ponder that question, consider the answer emperor Marcus Aurelius gave centuries ago during the Golden Age of Rome: To keep a clear and untroubled mind. Read more.

Keep Your Muscles Strong As You Age

 by Gabe Mirkin, M.D.

A review of 16 major studies found that just thirty minutes a week of strength training is associated with up to a 20 percent reduced risk for dying from any cause, or from cancer, heart disease or diabetes. Adding aerobic exercise reduced risk for dying by 40 percent. The World Health Organization recommends at least two days a week of muscle-strengthening activities for adults because having larger and stronger muscles appears to help prevent many diseases and prolong lives. Not moving your muscles puts you at increased risk for heart failure and premature death. For example: Read more

Cycling Past 50, 60 and Beyond Bundle

In this 3-article series, Cycling Past 50, 60 and Beyond, Coach John Hughes shares his personal insight and the current research into how different physiological systems worsen with age.
