Lumos New Helmet ― Innovation and Safety

In early March, Lumos launched the Ultra Fly Pro road helmet, available with and without MIPS. Bilal Raja, Head of Product at Lumos, explains, “We’ve taken our proven active safety technology from the commuter segment and adapted it to meet the specific needs and performance criteria of road cyclists.”

The company sent me the MIPS version for testing. Since the Ultra Fly Pro is only available in one size, M/L, and I wear a small, I was pleased that the FlexFit retention system adjusted to my head, providing a snug and comfortable fit. The side straps adjust to position the divider just below the ear, and a magnetic Fidlock Buckle allows for quick, secure on/off.

OptiGrip secures sunglasses when storing them on the helmet.

The helmet was engineered with more vents than its predecessor, Lumos Ultra — the 14 vents provide ample airflow, breathability, and comfort. The antimicrobial padding effectively wicks away sweat, preventing it from getting into your eyes. The OptiGrip feature seamlessly integrates with sunglasses, providing secure on-the-helmet storage when eyewear isn’t needed at some point in the ride.

Added Safety with Lumos Firefly Rear Light

Firefly, the company’s smart bike light, integrates seamlessly with the Ultra Fly Pro helmet. A single light fits into a dedicated port at the rear of the helmet. A magnetic attachment makes adding or removing the light for charging easy. For even greater visibility to drivers, the rear light can added to and set up with a left and right turn signal configuration, plus automatic brake light syncing.

Firefly light attaches to the Ultra Fly Pro helmet securely with strong magnets but is easy to remove for charging or when unnecessary.

Launch Campaign: Ultra Fly Pro and Firefly Bundle

As part of the company’s launch campaign, it offers the Ultra Fly Pro as a standalone product or bundled with the Firefly light and wireless charging cradle. The smart light integration is compatible with Lumos Firefly light for increased visibility whether riding in the peloton or commuting.

Bottom Line

Available in six colors and at 285 grams for the MIPS version, the Lumos Ultra Fly Pro helmet delivers an innovative and safety-focused product. The single-size offering is addressed with its FlexFit adjustable system. Add to it the ample ventilation and seamless integration with the Firefly light, making it an ideal choice for roadies who prioritize comfort and safety.

The only Lumos helmet rated by the Virginia Tech Testing Labs is the Lumos Ultra. The Lumos Ultra earned a 4 star rating. Its STAR value score of 17.19 ranked #175 of 224 helmets tested.
Having sustained a severe head injury, I am paying a LOT of attention to what VT says about helmets, which is why I am purchasing a Sweet Protection 5* rated helmet to replace my Specialized 4* rated helmet. I like the idea of the Lumos helmets (more lights the better), so I hope they submit them to VT for testing.

@Chuck H., The Ultrafly Pro seems to now be certified too. Lumos website (https://ridelumos.com/collections/road-bike-helmets/products/lumos-ultra-fly-pro?variant=44756340703491) cites 3 different certifications:
    Certifications
US: Complies with U.S. CPSC Safety Standard for Bicycle Helmets for Persons Age 5 and Older
    EU: CE EN1078:2012 + A1:2012
    F1447
