Knog’s Impressive New Frog Light Set

Jim’s Tech Talk

By Jim Langley

When Knog reached out to tell us about their Frog Light Set I had a déjà vu moment. I couldn’t remember how long ago I got my Frogs, but I know it has been at least years. And the photos of the new ones didn’t look that different. So, before I asked for more details, I replied to Knog to learn how their Frogs have changed?

It turns out that it’s a lot. What makes the Frogs so likeable is that they’re small (H/W/L: 80/32/42mm) and they go on and off easily since they’re held on by their built-in wrap-around rubber loop that’s made of medical grade silicone. Also, each Frog weighs only 21 grams.

Typically, you put them on the handlebars and seatpost, which takes only seconds. The loop stretches enough to fit around different diameter and shape components too (up to 32mm diameter). So you could mount them in other places. Frog is a fitting name because when in place they sort of resemble those little green tree frogs you may have seen out in the wild.

Frog lights provide some illumination but they’re primarily safety lights designed to make you visible to others. These vastly improved new Knogs feature 9 different light modes and run up to 80 hours on a full charge. A couple of the flashing modes use the sides of the lenses for side illumination too.

For output, the front light provides 40 lumens and the rear 20. The lights are USB-C rechargeable (cable not included). They’re operated simply by holding down the top to turn them on and then pressing it to change modes. They’re water resistant too, with an IP65 rating.

According to Knog, the efficient Chip on Board (COB) LEDs inside provide maximum brightness level for up to 90% of the battery burn time (see the run time chart for more details). This technology allows the LEDs to be arranged on a curved board, projecting light from the sides for additional rider safety.

There’s also battery level and status indicators built in to alert you that it may be time to charge the lights (see those charts for an explanation).

For other nice details, the Frogs come with a 2 year warranty and in a range of colors to complement your bike including Spider Black, Abyss Grey, Awesome Aquamarine, Tequila Sunrise, Army Jacket Green and New Denim Blue.

If you’re looking for additional safety lights I think Knogs new Frogs are a great choice because they’re easy to install, bright and simple to operate. Plus, they’re rechargeable so you’ll never need to buy new batteries as you had to with the old Frogs. The Frogs set sells for $54.95 and is available at bike shops and https://us.knog.com/products/frog-bike-light-set.

Is the front light bright enough for daytime cyclists to be more visible to car drivers?
