Anti-Aging: Training in Your 50s, 60s and Beyond

By Coach John Hughes

In the past, I’ve described the physical changes with aging in your 50s — both true aging and pathological aging. By training effectively you can slow (and even reverse in some cases) true aging. Exercise along with life style changes can significantly reduce the risk of pathological aging.

I specialize in coaching riders in their 50s, 60s and beyond. The same principles apply to all of the riders that I coach although the applications differ depending on the rider’s age and goals. Read more.

Making Wheelsets Truly Compatible

By Jim Langley

This week, I’ve got some wheel-compatibility suggestions for Mark Pryor, the co-founder of Alameda Velo (“we are goal-focused everyday cyclists”). They’re in the San Francisco Bay area. If you’re interested, learn more here: www.alamedavelo.com

It turns out that Mark and I met during the Low-Key Hill Climbs, fun events that took place for a few years in the fall on famous and not so famous steeps all over the Bay Area. Read more.

The Wiggle Room in the Weight Room

By Kevin Kolodziejski

Pull Your Socks Up

By Martin Sigrist

You don’t have to go to a gym in order to exercise. It’s much easier to incorporate “workouts” in to your daily routine.

Here’s a classic example. It helps train balance, mobility and stability. All three are vital to everyday health and all three are essential parts of living lives that are not only long but enjoyed to the full. Read more.

Stolen Goat Hexi+ Sunglasses Review

Sheri Rosenbaum

In late July, Stolen Goat announced the addition of performance sunglasses to their line of cycling gear, the Hexi and Hexi+. Both models come in various colors, with one sure to match your kit, frame, or helmet. The main differences between the two models are the Hexi+ has an upper and lower frame, and the Hexi is 5mm shorter in height. The company sent me a pair of their Helix+ sunglasses for testing as you can see in the below picture. Read more.

Cycling Past 50, 60 and Beyond Bundle

In this 3-article series, Cycling Past 50, 60 and Beyond, Coach John Hughes shares his personal insight and the current research into how different physiological systems worsen with age. In Fit for Life, he shows you that by exercising in different ways you can stay fitter than if you just ride your road bike. In Peak Fitness, he provides specific week-by-week workouts designed to make any rider a better, fitter cyclist. And in Training with Intensity, he explains the physiological benefits of riding with intensity; doing some hard riding slows the aging process and delivers an array of benefits at any age.
