Coach Rick Schultz

USA Cycling Coach, Product Reviewer, Bike Fitter

Rick Schultz.2015 jersey.1.WEBI started bicycling as a kid. I grew up riding Schwinn BMX bikes and tinkering with them by putting motocross bars on them. That’s probably where I started my life-long interest in engineering – figuring out how and why things work the way they do, and can I make them work better.

After my tour of duty in the Navy was over, I went back to school. I then started my full time job and went back to school again for another couple of degrees. One of the sad results of all of this working and schooling is that I let my weight get out of control. I decided to get a bicycle and start exercising and tinkering again.

Through a series of consultations with a local bike shop mechanic, I purchased a full bicycle tool kit and started wrenching on my bike. Then friends asked me to fix theirs. From here, I was fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time and was asked if I wanted to be a test rider for Cervelo. The same sort of thing happened with Shimano. For both I said YES!

I have my own product reviews website, biketestreviews.com, and  am honored to partner with and write product reviews for RBR.

In addition, I am a USA Cycling Level 2 coach and specialize in bike fitting, power and pedaling efficiency coaching. I am currently the bike fitter for Team Simple Green / Cycles Veloce, and my eBooks, Stretching & Core Strengthening for the Cyclist and Bike Fit 101: Your Toolset for a Great Bike Fit, are available in the RBR Bookstore.

As a USAC Certified Power Based Trainer, I specialize in helping athletes achieve their goals via training with power. As a USAC Certified Skills Instructor, I help athletes ride safer and race better via bicycle handling skills clinics. I also teaches the local Beginner Racer Program (BRP) for USA Cycling.

Product Review Crew I started road riding in 2003 after I got a nice bonus payment at work and bought an aluminum Specialized Allez, which my son now rides. Previously, I’d only done mountain biking. I was surprised how addictive being on the road became for me. I started commuting regularly on the bike, using…

Ask the Coach Columnist, RBR Co-Founder, Ret. I discovered the sheer joy—it’s not too strong a term—of pedaling when I began riding in the early ’70s to gain fitness for backpacking, mountaineering and skiing, my favored activities in my newly adopted state of Colorado. Riding also helped me lose the 50 pounds I had gained…
