Zwift has introduced its new Zwift Racing Score—a ranking system aimed at making virtual racing more competitive, fair, and accessible. This update is set to match racers with others of similar ability, enhancing the experience for both newcomers and seasoned participants.
Zwift Racing Score assigns each cyclist a numerical value between 0 and 1,000, reflecting their current fitness level and racing skill. The score is calculated using two key factors: the rider’s best 30-second and 10-minute power outputs from the past 90 days, and their performance in races. Points are awarded based on finishing positions, with bonus points for podium placements. The system also considers the quality and size of the racing field, offering more points in highly competitive events.
For those new to Zwift racing, the system simplifies entry by automatically assigning a category based on recent fitness data. As racers participate in more events, they can gradually build their Racing Score, with every race providing an opportunity to gain points.
To allow for more evenly matched competitions, the standard categories have increased from four to five:
• Category 1: 690–1000
• Category 2: 520–690
• Category 3: 350–520
• Category 4: 180–350
• Category 5: 1–180
Event organizers also have the flexibility to set custom category boundaries, supporting up to ten categories for more tailored racing experiences. Zwift Racing Score will be used for both open and women’s events.
Starting October 7th, Zwift Racing Score will be implemented in events such as the Zwift World Series, ZRacing Community Festival, Zwift Academy Make Up Races, and various community races. Racers can view their current Zwift Racing Score in their profiles on the Zwift Companion App, the Zwift game, or on Zwift.com.
“We are incredibly excited about the launch of Zwift Racing Score today,” says Mark Cote, VP Product at Zwift. “We have spent years researching the best algorithm, looking into data collected from millions of races held on the platform, and more importantly, working with the Zwift Community to collect feedback on how the system is functioning. We know how important it is to get this right. The feedback from the Zwift Labs club has been incredibly positive with many racers finding events more dynamic due to improved categorization. We will continue to evolve Zwift Racing Score and monitor community feedback but we are excited to see how Zwift Racing Score will help more people enjoy the benefits of racing on Zwift.”
Zwift’s new system aims to level the playing field in virtual cycling races, making it easier for cyclists of all levels to compete fairly and improve their performance.
