Are there any published objective studies on the dangers of sustained high HR? I complete some rides at an average 85% of Max [measuered max, not a calculated max]. Plenty of fuzzy anecdotal stuff out there but can’t find objective, peer-reviewed stuff.
What i have read is that while that will build your high intensity capacity, the intracellular adaptations of 90% max hr (you are at 85%, perhaps close enough, everyone has differences), max out after 5-6 weeks of once a week or so.
So your performance increases more quickly, but without the long foundational hours at zone 2, you miss those benefits, and without that your long-term ability to improve takes a hit.
Pro cyclists go even slower, per max hr, on zone 2 long rides than the weekend warrior cyclist.
There is a caveat: if you aren’t spending 8-10 hours plus on a bike, those lower hours may be best if at higher intensity, as you have more time to recover.
60-70% of Max HR is recovery ride territory (Zone 1)! According to Peter Attia & others, you will be in Z2 if your HR is 69 – 79% of Max.
