Add a Layer of Warmth to Your Winter Rides

Velocio launched its new Deep Winter Base Layer in men’s and women’s versions this winter. Like any base layer, you want it to be warm, close-fitting, wicking, and breathable. The Deep Winter Base Layer checks all the boxes and is the perfect complement to one of Velocio’s winter jerseys. (Read my recent review here.)

Grid-backed fabric on the front panel and sleeves provides added insulation without the bulk. The Merino wool mesh back panel adds breathability and moisture management.

The lightweight warmth comes from a Merino wool/polyester blend fabric. The front panel and sleeves use what I call a “waffle” fabric (Velocio calls it grid-backed). Its plush, soft design provides insulation, keeping you warm without adding bulk.  A Merino wool mesh back panel allows for breathability, wicking moisture away, and prevents overheating.

If you are unfamiliar with wearing a base layer, the proper fit is next to the skin, allowing moisture to be wicked away. Also, with minimum bulk, this base layer fits perfectly under bib straps and a jersey. In addition, Velocio uses flatlock seams throughout the garment to avoid chafing, thus ensuring maximum comfort.

The Deep Winter Base Layer is only available in black and comes in XS to 3XL in men’s and XXS to 3XL in women’s. Check the sizing chart on the Velocio website, as their gear tends to run small, but with this item, there is a good amount of stretch to the fabric. It all comes down to how tight you want the base layer to fit if you are in between sizes. If it’s too tight and it’s restricting on the bike. Too loose, and it won’t properly wick moisture away from your body.

As with all my cycling gear, I turned the base layer inside out, washed it in cold water, and hung it to dry. It came out wrinkle-free and without any shrinkage.

At $129, this base layer is a little pricey. But you’ll find a variety of uses for it, not just on the bike. I’ve worn it hiking or simply sitting around the house when I need an additional layer.

Bottom Line

Escape your winter pain cave, and don’t let blustery temperatures keep you indoors. You can be comfortable on the road or trail with the right gear, even if the wind is howling. Stay warm and cozy with Velocio’s Deep Winter Base Layer.
