Piece of Mind When Riding Alone
At Sea Otter Classic in April, Smith launched the Aleck Crash Sensor, integrating it into four of the company’s performance helmets – Trace and Triad for road and gravel riders and Forefront 2 and Payroll for the MTBers. The company sent me the Triad version to test, so I’ve based my insights on my experiences with this specific model.
The Triad boasts three safety features in one helmet. First, we are all familiar with Mips that reduces rotational forces caused by angled impacts to the head. Second, Zonal KOROYD coverage is used for energy absorption upon impact. Third, in the event of a crash where you are unresponsive, the Aleck Crash Detection Sensor sends alerts to emergency personnel, contacts, and other Aleck app users in the area. The alert includes your GPS location, making it quicker and easier to find you.
How Aleck Crash Sensor Works
Before you start, charge the sensor using the USB-C cable provided with the helmet. The sensor has approximately a two-week battery life, and the app provides a battery level indicator. Next, download the Aleck app to your smartphone (iOS and Android) and pair the helmet’s sensor to the app. Be sure to check if there are any firmware updates.
The app allows you to do a simulation crash test by bumping the helmet. It doesn’t take much to activate the sensor in simulation mode. The app gives you 45 seconds to cancel the alert before sending it.
Setting up your emergency contacts is also done in the Aleck app. It’s important to note that anyone added as an emergency contact must also download the Aleck app, which could be an issue if someone doesn’t want to install another app on their phone.
Within the app, there are several features, including SOS if you need to manually send an alert to your emergency contacts and Aleck app users within 3 km of your location.
Comfort, Fit, and Protection
All the protection in the world is worthless unless the helmet fits correctly. The Triad incorporates the VaporFit dial adjustment system, allowing for 270-degree fit adjustment. The side straps have minimal adjustability. However, the Y-strap divider ensures the straps stay flat and close to your face, avoiding vibration noise while riding.
With 19 vents, the Triad helmet keeps your head protected and cool on warm days. Additionally, the helmet has an Ionic+ antimicrobial lining that activates odor control when reacting to sweat, and its lightweight construction (290 g for a size medium) enhances overall comfort. Like many Smith helmets, the AirEvac ventilation system integrates with the company’s eyewear to keep lenses from fogging.
The Triad helmet, equipped with an Aleck Crash Sensor, is exclusively available in a matte black finish featuring a topographic print. It comes in sizes ranging from small to extra large and is priced at $210.

Seems like a good safety feature, but why only in black? I always choose a bright helmet color for better visibility.
