John’s Recovery Update, Summer Sun Tips

By John Marsh, Editor & Publisher

I had my 5-week post-surgery follow-up appointment with my surgeon Tuesday, which included X-rays to gauge the bone healing in my clavicle fracture. I got the best possible news: I was told “everything’s looking great,” that I could immediately ditch the sling I’ve been wearing almost 24-7 since the surgery (only exception, showering!), that I could start physical therapy to regain strength and range of motion in my left arm and shoulder, and that I can get back on the road in another couple of weeks.

Needless to say, I am one happy camper right about now!

The timing is ideal. We’ve had a long-ago-planned family vacation set for the first two weeks of June, so I’ll get back on the road after a couple of absolutely-needed weeks of R&R. Working through the injury and post-surgery period, while trying to maintain fitness with a rigorous trainer regimen, has been a trying time. I’m ready for a break. (And I get to test my 16-year-old son’s hypothesis that the 5-inch-long plate on my clavicle will set off the metal detector at the airport!)

While I’m away, though, we’ll only miss publishing one issue – June 16. I’ll publish from the road next week, June 9.

I’ve got some exciting news to share not long after I return.

In the meantime, enjoy today’s issue and and special features on sun protection. Keep reading!

Summer Sun Tips

Not long ago, an RBR Premium Member wrote in to ask if we could review some of the available cycling apparel with built-in sun protection. We have in the past reviewed certain piecesthat contain such protection. But we thought it would be more useful to write an article that helps explain such apparel, what to consider when purchasing it, list some of the companies that make it, and thus provide readers with tools they can use when considering their future sun-season clothing and gear purchases.

We took the same approach when writing a piece on sunscreen a couple years ago. Even though Summer doesn’t officially start for another three weeks in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s already “sun season,” and we need to be protecting ourselves when we’re out riding.

So don’t miss our package of sun-protection articles today, both under the Health umbrella: Sunscreen Info and Tips for Summer Riding, and A Primer on Sun-Protected Cycling Apparel.
