Seat height isn’t adjustable (33″ fixed height), because it’s a mini bike style ebike.
Mechanical disc brakes instead of hydraulic, but this means simpler maintenance, and braking power is still very good.
No fenders for wet weather riding, but fenders also don’t look cool.
How obtained: Manufacturer provided the ebike at their cost for review.
If you’ve been around any suburban neighborhood recently, you’ve probably noticed the growing trend of electric mini-bikes that resemble small dirt bikes or mopeds. These eye-catching ebikes have become especially popular among teenagers, so when Macfox offered me the chance to test drive their X1-S model, I was curious to discover what makes this style so appealing to younger riders.
After spending time cruising around on the Macfox X1-S, the answer became clear – these bikes deliver pure, simple fun with a cool aesthetic that stands out from traditional bicycle-styled ebikes.
Assembling the Macfox X1-S
The Macfox arrived requiring minimal assembly. It took me about 30 minutes to attach the front wheel, handlebars, sturdy kickstand, and headlight. The process was straightforward, with all necessary tools included in the box. Even those with limited mechanical experience should be able to complete the assembly without much difficulty.

Riding Experience
The moment you twist the throttle on the X1-S, it’s easy to understand its appeal. The 500W motor (with 750W peak power) delivers responsive acceleration that feels exciting without being intimidating. The power curve is well-tuned for a bike that’s likely to be ridden by younger, less experienced riders – providing enough zip to be fun but not so much that it becomes dangerous.
You can choose between using the twist throttle or one of three pedal assist levels (Eco, Mid, and High) depending on how much effort you want to exert. For most casual neighborhood cruising, the throttle-only option provides a motorcycle-like experience that seems to be the primary appeal for younger riders.
The long motorcycle-style seat is surprisingly comfortable, even though it lacks height adjustment. At a fixed 33 inches, it’s designed for a relaxed riding position that mimics a small dirt bike. The elongated design also allows for a passenger to hop on the back (though always with appropriate safety gear, of course).
The fat 20″ x 4″ knobby tires are a standout feature, providing excellent stability and cornering confidence. These wide tires grip well on pavement and handle smooth gravel paths without issue. Combined with the front suspension fork, the ride remains comfortable even on less-than-perfect surfaces. The suspension isn’t comparable to high-end mountain bikes, but it effectively absorbs bumps and dips you’ll encounter during typical neighborhood riding.
Features and Components
The X1-S keeps things relatively simple with its component selection. The mechanical disc brakes with large rotors provide reliable stopping power. While hydraulic brakes would offer more refined performance, the mechanical discs are perfectly adequate for the bike’s intended use and have the advantage of being easier to maintain and adjust.
The backlit LCD display is clear and shows your speed, battery level, and assist mode. A particularly nice touch is the battery status button that allows you to check the charge level directly on the battery itself – handy when deciding if you need to charge before heading out.
The single-speed drivetrain eliminates complexity, which is appropriate for a bike that will likely spend most of its time using electric power rather than pedal power. There’s no need to worry about shifting gears; just twist the throttle and go.
For nighttime visibility, the bike includes a front headlight and rear reflectors, though it lacks fenders for wet weather protection. That said, I suspect most riders will be keeping these bikes in the garage when it’s raining anyway, and fenders don’t look cool if you’re a teenager.
Battery and Range
The standard X1-S comes with a single 500Wh (48V 10.4Ah) battery that offers a claimed range of 38+ miles. As with all ebikes, this range will vary significantly based on rider weight, terrain, weather conditions, and how heavily you rely on the throttle versus pedaling. Riders consistently using full throttle at maximum speed should expect roughly half that range.
What’s unique about the Macfox is the option to upgrade to a dual-battery system, which doubles the potential range to 76+ miles. This flexibility allows budget-conscious buyers to start with the single-battery version and add the second battery later if they find themselves wanting more range.
Who’s It For?
The Macfox X1-S clearly targets riders looking for a fun, stylish alternative to traditional ebikes. I most commonly see these types of mini-bikes being ridden by teens in the 14-18 age range – primarily high school students and some ambitious 8th graders. The bike’s aesthetics and riding position appeal to young riders who might find conventional ebikes too practical or boring.
That said, there’s nothing stopping adults from enjoying the X1-S as well. Why shouldn’t we have fun too? The steel frame supports riders up to 300 pounds, and the overall design provides a unique riding experience that’s different from typical ebikes.
Summary
The Macfox X1-S delivers exactly what it promises: a fun, stylish electric mini-bike that prioritizes enjoyment over practicality. It’s not trying to be a commuter ebike or a serious off-road machine – instead, it focuses on providing an entertaining ride with head-turning looks.
At $1,089 for the single-battery version, it represents a solid value in the mini-bike segment of the market. The optional dual-battery upgrade ($1,388 total) offers flexibility for those wanting extended range without requiring the initial higher investment.
If you’ve been curious about the mini-bike style ebikes you’ve seen cruising around neighborhoods, the Macfox X1-S offers a well-executed version of this increasingly popular design. It’s easy to see why teenagers are drawn to these bikes – they’re simply a blast to ride.
