Recovering Smarter for Older Cyclists

By Lars Hundley

As the years go by, most cyclists notice a shift. What used to feel like a tough but manageable workout leaves you dragging the next day. Rides that used to take 24 hours to recover from now take 48—or more. Welcome to one of the realities of aging: slower recovery. It’s a natural part of getting older, but it doesn’t have to derail your cycling or your enjoyment of the sport. Read more.

Giving Thanks by Getting Fat Makes No Sense, Dying Like Olga Kotelko Does

By Kevin Kolodziejski

Even though Thanksgiving has come and gone, I still feel the need to share my scorn for what the holiday has become for too many people. A day to eat way too much food — good food, bad food, and any type of food in between — and then snooze off and on while remaining motionless in a recliner while watching way too much football. It’s the scenario that now seems to be the day’s most adhered to tradition. Given that you can go faster on ebikes, should older cyclists ride them?

QUESTION: Should older cyclists ride ebikes? This question was prompted by a reader response to my recent answer to a woman who asked if her 83-year-old husband, a long-time cyclist who had fallen from his bike and injured himself more than once lately, was too old to keep riding. Along with my answer, I mentioned the possibility of older riders switching to ebikes. The reader, who uses Syborg as a handle, said, “I would not advise an older person to use an e-bike. The higher riding speeds, compared to riding a pedal bike, of an e-bike requires quicker reflexes than an aging person may possess, especially when riding in a group. Falling at the higher speed attained on an e-bike can be much worse for an older person. You slow down with age, and you should embrace that as a good idea.” Read more.
