The Nathan Sports HyperNight gloves and convertible glove-mitts are a versatile accessory for cyclists in cool weather conditions. They are also suitable for cold weather running, hiking, or cross-country skiing. While the cold tolerance may vary from person to person, the glove-mitts are recommended for running at 20 to 35 degrees F (gloves rated at 30-50 degrees F). However, without windproof material, they are best suited for temperatures in the 40s and 50s when cycling. Read more.


Riding a Bike After Getting a New Knee

On my bike, I recently completed three laps around the middle school parking lot across the street from my house. And I was delighted.

Okay, it’s a no-big-deal ride, one that any school kid could do — except that I am 78 years old, and it was my first ride on a moving bicycle since I got a total-knee replacement for my right leg 36 days previously — and I was able to pedal with only a slight twinge of discomfort from the remaining stiffness in the joint. And I’m told that will go away as the healing progresses. Read more.


Exercising in Cold Weather

Heart attacks and strokes are associated with high blood pressure and increased clotting, and systolic blood pressure increases up to 1.7 mm Hg in the winter months compared to the summer months.  Cold weather is associated with an increased incidence of heart attacks. If you have heart or lung disease, you are far more likely to die in cold weather than in the heat. Read more
