Question: Since April I’ve been strictly watching my food intake, exercising and taking a weight-loss supplement with ephedra. But I’ve gained 30 pounds! I think the exercise is overdeveloping my quads and inner thighs.
I eat only 1,300 calories a day and try to burn most of it in the gym or on the bike. My gym’s fitness manager thinks I’m not eating enough and my metabolic rate has either totally tanked or I have some type of food allergy. Why do you think I’ve gained this weight? — Villa P.
Coach Fred Matheny Replies: First, stop taking any supplement that contains ephedra! It has been linked to severe health problems and death. You don’t need a dangerous substance to help you lose weight.
Sounds like you’re attempting to balance calories burned with calories consumed. That’s tantamount to trying to lose weight with mathematics. It’s a good idea in theory. But in the messy real world, it’s hard to be exact.
Because your body will tell you what you need, it’s better to ride and lift consistently, then eat enough so you have energy to train and fuel the activities of daily life.
Also, please consider getting a physical exam. No one gains 30 pounds of muscle in three months.
