Bikes

Andy Pruitt shares his expert's knowledge of the key catalysts for maximum cycling performance: choosing the correct frame size and then establishing a comfortable, efficient and powerful riding position.

Buying a new bike is such a personal matter.  You may hate a bike we love, depending on differences in terrain, cycling goals and riding style. How do you decide on a new bike?   Remember, the key is bike fit. If the bike doesn't fit you correctly, it will be unsatisfactory no matter how much you pay for it.  Read our advice from Coach Fred Matheny.

The last 30 years of cycling history have shown us that good frames can be built from a variety of materials.  What is the best frame material? It's virtually impossible to tell someone what bike they should buy, let alone what it should be made of.  Here are some pointers.

I have an old Bridgestone steel frame and want to upgrade. Should I buy a new bike or get new components for my old one? I could afford to buy an aluminum-frame bike with mediocre parts or, for the same money, put higher-quality parts on my old frame.

I'm looking for a cyclocross/winter/beater bike. I'll consider any combination of the three categories. What are the current value buys in bikes that fit this description?

How do I get into cyclocross? Do I have to buy a real 'cross bike?  Read what Coach Fred Matheny has to say, and then learn the specifics with the eBook, Cyclo-Cross for Roadies.

I just read the section on fixed-gear riding in Off-Season Training for Roadies. I know it would benefit my pedal stroke, but couldn't I accomplish the same results on my regular bike by simply selecting a gear and not shifting for the entire ride?

I put fenders on my road bike for winter training, but now my toe hits the front fender when I turn the wheel while riding slowly. Is this a problem?

I purchased a new frame, now my heels hit the chainstays on each pedal stroke. I never had this problem before and haven't changed my pedals or cleat position. What gives?

Bar-end shifters versus, brake/shift levers?  We have two reason why one may be better than the other.

I have an old Trek 800 that I'd like to set up like that so it's better for rides that include both pavement and dirt. What do I need to make the conversion?

If you want to carry a pump, where is the safest location to store it?  See our answer.

What you carry in bike bag can keep you on the road longer.  Here's our recommended list of bike-bag essentials for rides up to 100 miles in rural areas.

How do I carry gear for a weekend trip on a road bike that won't accept a rack? I want to travel light and stay in motels, but I still need to carry clothing and other items.  Read RBRs recommendations.

My race bike has a stiff aluminum frame. After a hard ride, my legs feel much more tired than they do on my steel-frame training bike. Is a stiff frame harder on the legs?

Does the frame size of a bike affect how I well you ride? You might have two different bikes that your ride seasonally and they are different sizes.  Read what Coach Fred Matheny says about proper frame fit.

When I purchase a new bike, should I have the shop measure me for the proper fit or simply match the current size of existing bike?

I weigh 225 pounds and own a great bike with a Reynolds 853 frame, Time Millennium carbon fork, Ksyrium wheelset and full Ultegra group. Am I too heavy for this setup? Does my size create an unreasonable risk that the frame, fork or wheels will fail?

I've always ridden mountain bikes, but some friends switched to road riding and love it.  What would be a good entry-level road bike to use for racing and for training?

Steel is an excellent frame material with several advantages.  The pros and cons of various frame materials make for interesting technical discussions. Coach Fred Matheny offers up his opinion.

Could you recommend a new bike that's under $800 and will be suitable for towing a trailer when I tour? I ride about 15 miles a day and 25-50 miles on weekends.  We have an answer to this difficult question

Buying a new bike is always fun, but a little scary, too, because it's a hefty investment that you want to last for several years. Do your research, do your test rides, and it'll be nearly impossible to make a bad choice.  We offer up some specific traits that you should pay attention to when road testing a new bike.

Ten years ago, we thought that a 22-pound bike was light and anything under 20 pounds was so gossamer as to be scary. Now the standard has changed so much that 16-18 pounds is the norm for high-quality road bikes.  To lighten a bike, where would you get the best bang for my buck: wheels, fork, frame or drivetrain? Or should you invest in a whole new bike?

My bike shop wants to sell me a bike with "women's geometry," but it doesn't fit right. The handlebar seems too close. Can a woman ride a man's bike?

I own a hybrid bike but ride tours where everyone else has a road bike. I've never had a problem keeping up because I train hard during the week. But I wonder -- if my average speed on a typical ride is 17 mph, how much would it increase if I got a road bike?

Time trial bikes have one advantage: They're designed to make it easier to get a good aero position. They usually have steeper seat angles and handlebars much lower than the saddle.   Can you set-up your road bike to make it areodynamically comparible?

I will be racing in a hillclimb, road race and time trial. I have two road bikes: a titanium Seven Axiom with Ksyrium wheels, and a steel LeMond Zurich with standard 32-spoke wheels. The latter weighs about 3.5 pounds more. Should I install clip-on aero bars on the Seven for training and the hillclimb? Or rig the LeMond for time trials so I can train on it all summer?

I have an old road bike that I want to turn into a time trial machine. When positioning aero bars, what part of my forearms should contact the armrests? How far apart should my elbows be? Should the seat be level or tilted up or down?  Small position adjustments CAN increase your aero efficiency. We lay out some general rules for setting up a road bike for time trialing.

How do you  install fenders without eyelets on the rear dropouts or fork. Here's how.
