How Can I Duplicate My Cleat Position?

Question: I need to replace my worn Look cleats. How do I make sure the new cleats are aligned like the old ones? — Sara J.

Coach Fred Matheny Replies: Simply trace around the old cleats with a Sharpie or similar marker. Then match the new cleats with the outline.

Use new bolts when you mount new cleats. Some riders don’t do this, but walking in cleats might eventually damage the driver slot, making it hard to keep bolts tight. Also, grease their threads.

If you don’t have rubber cleat covers for when you’re off the bike, invest in a pair. They’ll help your cleats last much longer. I always carry a pair in my jersey pocket.

There are also fancy jigs designed to help you exactly position new cleats on existing or new shoes. But, typically, just a bit of trial and error can help you overcome any difficulties in finding the right location and alignment.
