UnTapped Salted Cocoa Gel and Waffle – Quick Review

By Sheri Rosenbaum

UnTapped Salted Cocoa Gel and Waffle

When I received the company’s email announcing the launch of a cocoa version gel and waffle I was all over it. For those who’ve read my nutrition product reviews, you know my love of chocolate. Both products did not disappoint. Like the other UnTapped products I’ve previously reviewed, there was a nice mild flavor. Not an overpowering sweet chocolate flavor that might cause digestive issues during hard rides.

The Salted Cocoa gel has an additional 60mg of sea salt for when you need electrolyte replenishment. It has 100 calories per 1 fluid ounce packet, 26g carbs, naturally occurring amino acids and antioxidants, and a lower glycemic value. The lower glycemic value provides prolonged, sustained energy rather than a quick burst and subsequent crash. The ingredients are simple, organic pure Vermont maple syrup, organic cocoa, and sea salt. No additives or preservatives. Just great taste.

The Cocoa Waffle is also a great power snack on a ride. It contains 140 calories, 20g of carbs, real cocoa, pure maple syrup, and maple sugar, along with a few other ingredients. It is also vegan, Kosher, and nut-free.

While both the gel and waffle fit nicely in a jersey pocket, I tested the gel in an Energy Flask. The consistency was perfect for the flasks and the gels are a great source of fuel during the winter months as maple syrup doesn’t freeze.

Larger quantities are cheaper, a 5 pack of the gel is $9.95 and a 4 pack of the waffle is $9.95. These two products and many others are available on the Slopeside Syrup UnTapped website.
