Do You Have a Good Heat-Rub Recipe

Q:  Do you have a good formula for a homemade muscle rub that creates some heat and blood circulation for cool spring days? — Dave K.

COACH FRED:  When I started racing, I used the following formula, handed down by riders from half a century ago:

  • pint of rubbing alcohol
  • 1 pint of witch hazel
  • 3 ounces of oil of wintergreen
  • 3 ounces of olive oil

You can get the ingredients at a pharmacy. It worked fine, but I got lazy! Now I use commercial products such as those from SportsBalm.
