Today’s QoW comes from yours truly. Happy Holidays, and here’s hoping you make it out for some nice rides during this holiday season! —John Marsh

(We encourage you to submit you own QoW ideas using the Question of the Week Ideas link.)

Do You Have a Holiday Riding Tradition (say, a Christmas or New Year’s Day Ride)?

Our club’s tradition is to do a “Ride the Temperature Ride” on New Years. We ride as many miles as it is degrees (F). If it is 20 degrees we ride 20 miles. If it is 5 degrees we ride 5 miles. If it is below zero we stay indoors.

David, that may be the only “benefit” of living in frigid Iowa! Your New Years rides can be blessedly short! We’re apt to be riding 50 or 60 miles down here in the South! 😉

If you want to try your hand at one of the most dangerous rides – probably ever, then this might be the one for you…I know I won’t do it anymore. http://www.granfondoguide.com/Events/Index/3894/orange-county-new-years-day-ride
The group swells to over 1,000 riders, and all through Huntington Beach, Newport Beach and Laguna Beach, the motorcycle cops actually swerve into the riders to keep all 1,000 in the bike lane. Red lights are run since the group is over a mile long and there are plenty of crashes, broken bikes and broken bones. Each year these knuckleheads do it again, I don’t get it…..
