Cycling Science
"New Developments for the Technical
Enthusiast"
Cycling Science was
a highly regarded magazine published in California from late 1989 to mid 1997
featuring expert technical
articles on everything from training to biomechanics to aerodynamics. It was
the creation of Chester Kyle, Ph.D. and Ed Burke, Ph.D. ― two
Americans recognized as world leaders in cycling technology and physiology.
The goal of
Cycling Science
was ambitious and
stated without hesitation in the first issue:
"For years, there has been a gap in the depth of
scientific information available to cyclists who need and want more
technical detail in the areas of bicycling technology, mechanics, training
techniques, physiology, biomechanics, composite materials, instrumentation,
engineering, aerodynamics, human powered vehicles and other topics of
interest.
"Our primary objective is to bring you well-documented articles written by
the experts in their area. These people are on the frontiers of research and
design in cycling. . . . Our articles are full of useful detail, and are
written for interest and understanding."
This CD contains the complete and unabridged Cycling
Science. Every page of all 23 issues has been scanned in color with
covers, photos, diagrams,
charts and other graphics intact. Even advertisements are included,
providing an interesting window into what was important in the 1990s and how
products have evolved since then.
Note: The scanning process used has
not produced crystal sharpness but has made the complete text of each issue
searchable with the Adobe
Acrobat Reader "find" function. Any topic -- chain friction, optimal
cadence, carbohydrate feeding, you name it -- can quickly be found in any issue. For ease of reading pages can
simply be upsized to 125% or larger.
In many respects, this CD is a historical archive.
It contains much research on topics that were cutting edge during its
publication period. Ed Burke's reviews of the era's technical publications will
be of interest to those doing research or experimentation today.
Read in today's light, the evolving technologies and predictions of
cycling's future are fascinating and even entertaining. It's also impressive to
see how much has proved to be dead-on accurate and as relevant today as it was
10 or 15 years ago. Of course, there are some misses too.
Why is RBR selling this important collection as a CD instead
of an eBook? An eBook was simply impossible given the size of each Cycling Science
issue -- around 24MB. All 23 issues containing 102 articles are just
$23.95 ($20.36 for
Premium Site members) with no additional charge
for shipping to any address
around the world. The original
subscription price for the complete set of magazines would have exceeded $150.
Note:
Your order will be filled by Chet Kyle himself from his office in northern
California. As a Cycling Science founder, Dr. Kyle wants to keep this
important collection of knowledge available, particularly for those working to
advance the sport. He'll
receive your order via RBR and ship the CDs by U.S. Postal
Service first-class mail. Please allow 2-3 weeks for delivery, perhaps a bit longer for
non-U.S. addresses.
Premium
Site
memberships as well as orders for eBooks and eArticles may be combined with CD
purchases.
